Walkers will learn about Judge Jeffreys and the Bloody Assize, the grip of the Black Death and of course the many ghosts that are said to haunt its historic taverns and gloomy alleyways. Ratty's TrailIf you fancy a more rural walk in Dorchester during your stay, this is perfect. Ratty’s Trail aims to show visitors the beautiful Frome Valley Corridor and illustrate the importance of the wildlife and their habitats to the area. This picturesque Dorchester walk follows an easy, circular route through countryside, and it’s quite an easy one as it sticks to a smooth grassy track. The walk is 1.5 miles long and usually takes around an hour. Look out for the many water voles along the way!

A Roman TownDorchester’s history is still visible at every turn, and this Dorchester walk is a great way to learn a bit more about its Roman past and the important sites. This walk starts at the town pump and includes Dorchester’s most famous historic spots, including Judge Jeffrey’s lodgings, the Roman wall, the famous Thomas Hardy statue and of course the Roman Town House. Dorchester Town WalksDorchester is often described as the ‘small town with the big story’, and as most of it is within walking distance from the town centre there are a number of walks that include the main sights. Sights to see include Dorchester’s prehistoric henge monument, the Roman amphitheatre at Mambury Rings and of course, the buildings linked to Thomas Hardy and his works.
