Dorchester is famed as Thomas Hardy’s birthplace, and he wrote ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ in the town. The beautiful thatched cottage in which Hardy was born and raised is just a few miles from Dorchester and is open to visitors. Visitors should note that there are no toilet facilities within the cottage.
Fans of the writer may also wish to take the Thomas Hardy Walk, which follows Hardy’s very footsteps. Maiden Castle, on the outskirts of the town, is England’s largest hillfort and is not to be missed by those with a taste for history. The Cerne Abbot Giant (also known as the ‘rude giant’) is visible in the hills to the north of Dorchester, and has long been a source of speculation.
