One of the best ways to appreciate the Tavistock's canal is with a circular walk designed to showcase it and its surrounding history. The Tavistock Canal Walk is circular, and is 6.5 miles in length. Start in Canal Wharf and follow the canal until you come to the former Mill Hill branch.
From here, follow the canal as closely as is possible to the Mill Hill Quarry, from which you can follow a footpath through picturesque fields back to Tavistock. Look out for Crowndale Farm, said to be Sir Francis Drake’s birthplace, and the former miners’ cottages at Mill Hill. Area of this walk can be wet, so wellies are a good idea.
