Saunton Sands is another gem in the north Devon coast’s surf crown, and it’s a large beach with plenty of space to get on with what you love most. Out in the waves you’ll find long slow walls making it an ideal spot for those new to surfing. Sheltered from NW-N winds, the surf is a popular choice with those who aren’t too experienced.
The beach rolls on for three and a half miles, and Saunton is infamous for having some of the UK’s best waves. Backing on to the Atlantic, on a day with great swell it can offer line after line of spectacular long slow rollers that lure longboarders from around the country.
There’s a pay car park located just behind the beach so you won’t have far to carry your board, and Saunton Sands doesn’t have the problem of space that Croyde Bay can encounter during busy times. That said, look out for kiteboarders when it’s windy as the waves prove just as popular with them on a good day. As ever, check the tide times before making your way to Saunton for a surf, especially as the water retreats a whopping 500 metres at low tide. The waves at Saunton Sands may look gentle, but prepare for a surprise once you get in!
