From catastrophic shipwrecks to cunning pirates going about their murky dealings, the town of Salcombe has always had strong links with the sea and its past is a fascinating treasure trove of tales and real happenings. Where better to learn all about the triumphs and the disasters the town has witnessed in its waters than at Salcombe Maritime Museum?

This family-friendly attraction is packed from top to bottom with artefacts from shipwrecks, photos and paintings that tell the tale of a town’s relationship with the ever unpredictable sea. Hands-on displays encourage children to engage with what they sea, so visitors of all ages can learn everything from what life was like for young sailors, to how smugglers shaped the town and the quests to resurrect wrecked ships from all over the globe.

The museum includes fun models, interesting photographs and real shipwreck artefacts that explain the relationship between Salcombe and the sea, and there’s a whole collection of treasures found on the sea bed by the divers who have braved the deep waters. The museum covers everything from ancient times right up until today, so expect to learn a lot and have a great time.
