Enveloped in the rolling South Devon countryside of Marldon, Compton Castle is a beautiful medieval fortress close to Paignton. Compton Castle was home to the Gilbert family for 600 years, including Sir Walter Raleigh’s half brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert.
The castle is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public between April and October, and visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the castle at 2pm daily. The medieval kitchen offers a glimpse into how life in the household would have been in the castle’s heyday, and the great hall offers an imposing welcome to its visitors.
There’s a trail for children which brings every room to life for them, and this is the kind of building that is small enough to feel like a grand family home as well as a foreboding castle with a history. In addition to the dramatic castle itself, its gardens are equally breathtaking and include several peaceful trails. Look out for the herb and rose gardens as you enjoy them.
