Do you like a varied ride that takes in as much as possible? The Taw Valley Ride is a circular one, and it’s a lovely way to experience Devon’s countryside and take in tranquil views on horseback. The ride follows public bridleways and is twenty miles long, and depending on your experience you’ll have the opportunity to stretch the ride out further and venture across some fields and streams.
The Taw Valley Ride passes through shady woodland, along winding country lanes and between farmer’s fields, so it’s as relaxing as it is interesting. The views of the River Taw make it well worth tackling this ride, and you’ll also pass a mill amidst the many working farms. The ride circles the modest village of Ashreigney which is around 15 miles from Barnstaple and dates back to the Domesday Book, so if you’ve an eye for history and love to feel like you’ve stepped back in time during a ride this is the one for you.
Many riders head to Devon to enjoy getting up close to its famous scenery and enjoy the great outdoors with their horse, and this is one of the nicest rides for those who are new to the county as it takes in so much. You’ll find several car parks to choose from along the route, so you can pick it up at several points. It’s worth noting that there are one or two steep hills along the route, and they can get quite slippery.
