River Cottage, Kingswear

My wife and I had a fantastic time staying in this cosy and deceptively spacious 2-bed terraced house overlooking Dartmouth and the River Dart during a relatively quiet time of year. The house commands a spectacular view from the living room and front bedroom. It was very nice to have an open fire too which we made use of one evening. The house was very clean with all the essentials and more provided. It took a little while for the house to warm up with the storage heaters but it was never cold (even in early March) and a fan heater is provided in addition to having the fire. Good fun taking the ferry across to Dartmouth and back - makes you feel like a local. Enjoyed trips to Coleton Fishacre House and Gardens and the coast road down to Torcross and Slapton Sands with fantastic views near Blackpool Sands. Great food and more cosy fires at The Royal Oak in Dartmouth. A bit of climbing on the steep roads and steps up (and down) to the property is required (as it must be for almost every house in Kingswear) and on-street parking is available a 5 min walk away up behind the house on Higher Contour Road. This small inconvenience was well worth paying for the great view from the house. The house also has an outdoor terrace at the front which would be great during Summer months, though naturally in this location it's not particularly private - but this may only bother some people. Overall a highly recommended place to stay with a great view to relax and get away from it all, especially at this time of year when traffic and tourists were scarce.

An all round excellent holiday

We've stayed in River Cottage before, what can we say but it's all that we wanted in a chilled out holiday. Kingswear/Dartmouth are just lovely areas for walks, country pubs, site seeing, etc etc we fell in love with this area of Devon. We'll be going back later on in the year.

River Cottage

Well were do we start, first of all River Cottage was excellent, very clean, bright, everything you needed was there. The views from the cottage were lovely. There are some lovely walks in the local area, most of them end up at a pub. We'll be back.

Devon delight

We looked for a short break in a Devon cottage that would fit our itinerary - Sunday to Wednesday and found the perfect plan in River Cottage. The location was dramatic with a fantastic view from the huge panoramic bay windows. The cottage had everything we could have wished for and more. Admittedly it is a climb up the hill to it but most worthwhile. The road leading to the entrance is very narrow and may seem daunting but parking at the top of the hill is not too arduous. The manager lives next door and is both very welcoming and helpful. The village of Kingsweir has a small shop, cafe and two pubs. Characters abound! Food at the Ship was excellent both in quality and quantity with entertaining landlord who also welcomes well behaved dogs. Our only disappointment was not staying longer! We will certainly be back.

River Cottage

This house was perfectly placed to appreciate the long summer evening sunset. Good standard of cleanliness and equipment along with helpful owners. Easy access by ferry across to Dartmouth. I would stay on this side of 'the river' every time.

River Cottage

River Cottage is lovely, the views over the river Dart are wonderful from the front garden terrace and the lounge. Both bedrooms are lovely, the master having wonderful views also. Kitchen large and modern. Can't fault it. Will return.

Fantastic customer service and great holiday experience

I made a mistake with our names and dates of holiday and customer service was really helpful. They acted promptly, was very courteous. Negotiated my change of dates and even reimbursed me a part of what I paid as it was extra! The property was excellent. It's in Kingswear so it's on the coast on a hill so the steep steps and narrow stairs were expected. My children didn't need a pushchair any more so that wasn't a problem. The owner/caretaker was so pleasant and we'll go back there again any time!!!

River Cottage

The above property is situated a long way up a hill and accessed by 30 steps..it was well worth the climb for the view alone! The cottage was clean, homely and well appointed. The key holder who lives next door was very welcoming and carried our cases up for us. We found plenty to do in the area without having to travel a great distance. All in all a fantastic holiday.

Beautiful Cottage in a Beautiful Location

River Cottage was wonderfully situated to give beautiful views of the river Dart and across to Dartmouth. It is easy to find and within 5-6 minutes walk into the centre of Kingswear, with it's village shop, wonderful church and very friendly pubs. The cottage was very well equipped and we enjoyed the use of the open coal fire on the more chilly evenings. Kingswear is a great location for both couples and families, we enjoyed walks along the coastal paths as well as boat trips and steam trains. As National Trust members there are lots of beautiful properties close by that we could enjoy. I would eagerly recommend River Cottage to those wanting to take a break from the madness of modern life and just admire the scenery.

River Cottage

Spotless accommodation in River Cottage, Kingswear. Beautifully comfortable beds & top quality bed linen, pillows & duvets(Christies) The kitchen was marvellously equipped for the odd evening we ate at home on the patio with unbelievably beautiful views of the River Dart & Dartmouth. We even had a spectacular view of the RNC end of term firework display!! Also of cruise ship coming in to port. Very friendly & helpful key holder who provided us with an airer when it was realised it was the one thing that had not been thought of! We delighted in walking as much as possible rather than using the car as we drive so much at home. We used the ferry services back & forth to Dartmouth, such a lovely way to tavel. And what a treat to watch (& use) the steam train from Kingswear Station just a few moments away. A general shop nearby, and loads more in Dartmouth where there are numerous choices for eating out. We enjoyed sitting by the river at the pub by the High Ferry. We discovered a beautiful dog friendly beach by advice of our neighbour at Mann Sands. A steep 1 mile walk from the car park, but if you are fit & have the energy, you would not be disappointed! A little further along the River Dart we visited the National Trust's Greenway, once Agatha Christie's home. And further afield we adored Salcombe, Bigbury on Sea - and shall return to the Pilchard Inn on Burgh Island, an ancient inn that almost feels like you are in a fortress! Perhaps next time we can get on the famous sea tractor. Perhaps a note should be made that this property would be unsuitable for wheelchair disabled or infirm/elderly due to the steepness of the road location & the number of steps to the front door. But that kept us fit!(very!) We loved this part of Devon & have fallen in love with it. We are recommending this property to others, and would like to return!

River Cottage

Recently stayed in River Cottage for 8 days. What can I say-amazing!!!! The cottage was immaculate, everything was provided, even the little extras that you often forget to take such as dishcloths, tea towels etc. The location is perfect and cannot be faulted. We spent a lot of time just sitting in the lounge admiring the views. Would definitely stay here again.

River Cottage

This was our first visit to Dartmouth and to River Cottage. It was a lovely experience. The cottage was of the highest quality both in its position and its appointment. It lacked nothing as far as we were concerned. We will certainly return.

Wonderful views.

We stayed at River View in Kingswear for five days and wish it had been longer! Once we had worked out where to park the car (avoiding the narrow road to the front of the property) and become a little fitter scaling the hills and stairs, we had a glorious time! Sitting in the lounge looking at the view (with binoculars) is better than TV! You can see across the boats and the delightful steam railway, to Dartmouth and the Royal Naval College. So much going on! We have holidayed in Dartmouth (Stoke Fleming) for the last 20 years but are now sold on Kingswear!

Lovely holiday in River Cottage

Returning to Kingswear for third year running with Blue Chip Holidays. Have previously stayed at Woodbine House and Hillside Terrace. River Cottage equally good; very clean, comfortable and quiet. Superb views. Very helpful neighbour/key holder. Steep hill & steps to property as expected in this location. Would recommend.

Lovely cottage, lovely place

My husband and myself stayed at River Cottage as a 60th birthday treat. The cottage was perfect with everything you could need. The view was amazing, never got fed up watching the various boats on the river. Just a short walk down the hill to the ferry crossing over to Dartmouth, lots to look at here. The neighbours at River Cottage held the keys, they were very friendly and were there if we needed any help, but didn't interfere with what we were doing. In all a lovely place to stay and very relaxing, a big thumbs up.
