Cafes don’t come much more unusual than this one, as the River Exe Cafe sits right in the middle of the Exe Estuary and can only be reached by boat. If you fancy tucking into a meal with the feeling of being away from it all then it’s perfect - as you’ll be surrounded by water and the cafe is set on a floating barge.
The River Exe cafe is one of Devon’s most intriguing places to eat, and the fact that you either need your own boat or to make your way across the water by water taxi to reach it only adds to the excitement (especially for children). The cafe opens between April and September every year, and it’s a popular spot for a fresh coffee while you admire the views or for a full meal made with West Country produce.
The menu changes with the catch of the day and the availability from the suppliers, and the ever-changing Specials board tends to include Exmouth mussels, crab and fish and chips. The Exe Estuary is renowned for its bird life, a popular spot with those who love water sports and there’s even a little grey seal who pops up to say hello beside the cafe from time to time, so a visit to the cafe is an experience as much as it is a treat.
