The 11 mile walk between Exeter and Dawlish Warren not only showcases some of the city’s most historic scenery but also takes its walkers along one of Devon’s most picturesque stretches of coastline. The walk starts beside Exeter Canal before picking up the Exe Estuary and the South West Coast Path.
The canal is one of Exeter’s most popular walking routes thanks to its even pathways, and if you follow it to Turf Locks you’ll see it widen as it merges with the estuary. Continue along the pathway and you’ll see Powderham Castle to your right, one of the city’s most popular family attractions. You’ll be able to peer into the deer park that surrounds the castle and see the 600 year old building tucked amidst the woodland in the distance.
Anyway, moving onwards and you’ll join the South West Coast Path not long after passing Powderham at Starcross. The walk between Starcross and Dawlish Warren is an unchallenging one with gorgeous estuary views, and the Riviera Line passes alongside the route so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to greet passengers as they chug their way along to Torbay. Look out for Cockwood Harbour as you go, as it’s home to the Anchor Inn – a historic pub that serves great food.
