Description

2 The Square is situated in the pretty village of Whimple, just a few miles from the City of Exeter.  Located in heart of Devon’s pretty countryside you can enjoy both the beauty of the rural setting and  the beaches of East Devon, including the two mile sandy beach at Exmouth, which are less than half an hour away.

Refurbished in 2012, the cottage has been finished to a high standard. The property is punctuated with period features and has clever modern twists throughout. Externally, the cottage has a south facing courtyard complete with table, chairs and barbeque.

Whimple has two good pubs.  The Thirsty Farmer is particularly child friendly and serves great food.  It also provides entertainment with regular live music.  Also available nearby is a village shop, a post office and a church. The Whimple Heritage Centre provides a wealth of information relating to the village history, including its renowned cider making tradition and world famous orchards.

The beautiful City of Exeter is located just a few miles away and provides excellent shopping, social and cultural facilities, including the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. The beach at Exmouth is a 20 minute drive away while Dartmoor, which is ideal for hiking, riding and cycling, is within 30 minutes of the property. Sidmouth, well known for its week-long folk festival in August, is just half an hour away. The market town of Honiton is also within a short drive where a warm welcome, antiques shops and a museum devoted to the town’s lace making past, can be found.

There are many attractions for all the family in the local area including, Escot, Bicton Gardens, The Donkey Sanctuary and Pecorama, where the garden trains and games can easily fill a day with activity. Killerton House, a National Trust property, is also within a short drive, perfect for both sunny and rainy days out.

The owner provides each booking with a complimentary ‘Taste of the West’ welcome pack including a variety of local Westcountry products.

2 The Square

We caught East Devon at its best. After a long winter and a cold spring, summer came good as we travelled to Whimple, a lovely village with a good community spirit. Exeter and wonderful, scenic East Devon were close to hand - and an abundance of narrow lanes too, but what's the rush, we drove carefully, made good use of passing places and got cheery Thank You, Devon folk are laid back and friendly. We had some lovely food and drinks, and too many cream teas, in cafes where the staffs were friendly and understood customer service. The owner of 2 The Square is a local lady and she gave us a grand welcome for our week in what used to be her own home, so no sparing the quality of the place, although being a 19th Century cottage, it had a few foibles, and no faulting the local produce that she found for us.We found Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton to be quintessentially English seaside resorts, admirable for their lack of tacky tourist shops and lovely beaches, and both worthy of 5 stars. Exmouth, Exeter and Honiton were worthy of the day spent there, Axminster is sadly afflicted by an excess of traffic, but try the flapjack in The Boston Tea Party cafes in Axminster and/or Exeter. We saw Seaton on the one poor afternoon we had, and would hate to think what this town of very faded glory is like in the depth of winter, we were glad to flee to the Donkey Sanctuary, a wonderful place if you have any affinity with animals. All in all, we had a very good week aided by the good weather and the beautiful scenery as we drove around, we'll be back to explore this area more.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful cottage. We found everyone to be very friendly and can recommend both village pubs for food and atmosphere. We found the cottage to be very well equipped and comfortable. The welcome pack was a lovely surprise!
