You may just have heard of a little film called 'We Bought a Zoo'...well now you can visit the place where the blockbuster started. The true story depicted by Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson actually happened here in the wilderness of Dartmoor, and you may even catch sight of Benjamin Mee and his children as they go about the daily business of tending their animals.
Close to Plymouth, the zoo is set in 33 acres of unspoilt woodland and enjoys some of the best views on Dartmoor. Known for its fascinating collection of big cats, the zoo is home to tigers, lions, jaguar, bears monkeys and all kinds of other animals. Animal enrichment sessions mean visitors can watch in awe as the big cats pounce for their meat just as they would in the wild, and the zoo’s story means it’s one of Devon’s most unusual attractions.
There’s plenty of wide open space to enjoy the zoo in your own time, and children are free to make the most of the outdoors and run free during their visit. Picnics are welcome throughout the zoo, and the keepers welcome questions. This is one of the country’s most relaxed animal parks, and since inspiring the silver screen it’s also one of the most famous. If the touching tale of the zoo has passed you by, brush up before your visit with Benjamin’s book ‘We Bought a Zoo’.
