Description

Few buildings can claim such a rich and diverse historical contribution to their parish community as Churston Old School House. It is a well-known and much admired house locally, which is now for the first time, available as a wonderfully relaxing place for groups of friends and families to congregate for lazy holidays, action packed short breaks and special occasions.

Churston Old School House is in fact two beautiful cottages that are side by side and they seamlessly merge into one large and very interesting dwelling, offering accommodation for ten guests across five bedrooms.

The building itself is Grade II listed and constructed of local stone in a Tudor style, it has been lovingly restored and now combines original features and much character, with practical modern conveniences. The former main classroom is now a fantastic and vast dining or games room that is more akin to a banquet hall with vaulted celing, mezzanine and a wood burner for cosy nights in.

The surrounding area is perfect and it is a country pub and dog walkers paradise. Not only do you have a highly regarded Inn on the door step, but the South West Coast Path and several renowned beaches are a pleasant stroll across the golf course. There are two enclosed private pet friendly garden areas which are also perfect for hide and seek.

A short walk from the house is the excellent Churston Farm Shop plus a garden store and popular café. The ferry to Dartmouth is a five minute drive. Lupton Manor House is an absolute gem and is within walking distance, a delightful setting for a cream tea, a peaceful walk around the grounds or perhaps a wedding!

This is a superb destination for lovers of character and history. From the solid elm doors and working bell tower, to the original school coat hooks in the entrance hall, it has personality and charm by the bucket load and will leave a lasting impression on all guests lucky enough to stay.

Thank you!

We travelled from Sussex and North Devon to celebrate our son’s 40th birthday. We couldn’t have wished for a more pleasant stay: your beautiful home(s) swallowed us all up and there was room to spare! Visits to Berry Head and Dittisham completed our delightful break. Thank you!

The house is great & well equipped

We have had a great week helped by fantastic weather that allowed us to explore the locality – walk to Dittisham and other parts of the coastal path were stunning. We had a lovely dinner at the Rock Fish restaurant in Dartmouth and an equally disappointing dinner at Churston Court (awful service!!). The house is great & well equipped.

Fantastic cottages and a perfect mid-term break

Fantastic cottages and a perfect mid-term break. Lots to do albeit February and a wonderful location for our young children (7,6,6 & 2 yrs). Crabbing in Dartmouth and the ferry trips were a massive hit .. even some soft play round the corner for our one and only rainy day! Cottage and house really well equipped. Will highly recommend this house and the amazing local walks around Churston and the bays/coves. Will be back in the summer!

Back To School

Our holiday was excellent, the Old School House at Churston was fantastic for families, and the experience of staying in what was an old School was great fun for the children, I had to pretend to be a Victorian Headmaster. The naughty stool in the main hall which is the dining area in the school house was put to good use and the children really enjoyed playing Schools. The property is made up of two dwellings that can be joined together via locking doors. It is furnished with many period pieces and most comfortable with plenty of places to creep off and find some solitude if you want. The gardens are large and well kept as well as being child friendly. There is an excellent hotel in Churston village where you can have a quiet drink in the garden, the interior is decorated with armour and period paintings and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. The property was well equipped and we couldn't fault it. All in all great value for money we'll definitely be staying there again.

Had a lovely stay, would recommend to other large groups.

Had a lovely stay. Good for everywhere, well equipped, quiet gardens, pleasant and plenty of room for children to play. Would recommend to other large groups. We could still find a quiet corner to chill whenever we needed. Liked the artwork.

The Old School House, Brixham

Firstly, a few minus points: The heating system was a little confusing and even though we were lucky with a mild spell at the end of October, the Dining Hall was struggling to meet a comfortable temperature at times. Although generally well equipped, the interiors of the kitchen cupboards could have been smartened up and, for a party of ten, crockery proved to be inadequate at times. The bedrooms were all of good size but some lacked hanging space/wardrobes. Some of our adults felt that the beds should have been larger (There were no big people in our group !) And the plus side: Overall, our party were very happy to spend a week in such a lovely house and I had positive feedback from son and daughter and their families. Having taken the whole of the property, there was plenty of room for everyone to relax, the furniture was very comfortable and the children had an amazing amount of space. We all valued the provision of the lovely extra touches including flowers, wine and biscuits. Everyone, including the children, said they would like to come back

Christon Ferrers Old School House

A fantastic property, which is in a perfect location for a large family holiday. There were three generations of the family totalling eleven in all. The property splits nicely into two, with separate kitchens and the ability to put older (or younger) members away from any noise of the main house. The extremely large dining room made it easy for us all to eat at the same table. As we were there for a 70th birthday celebration, this was a fantastic bonus. I would highly recommend this property for a large group wishing to combine a family occasion with a holiday destination with lots to explore.

Have enjoyed the most wonderful 3 nights in this gorgeous place

Our extended family of 10 have enjoyed the most wonderful 3 nights in this gorgeous place. We loved the flowers, Prosecco on arrival and the property was immaculate throughout, even with chocolates on the tree for the children! We had a super dog walk to Elberry Cove, but mostly snuggled by the gorgeous fire, eating and drinking. We can’t wait to return

We can’t recommend this beautiful place highly enough

A group of 7 spent an amazing New Year week in this beautiful cottage. We had a proposal in the group, a surprise pirate themed 40th birthday party, New Years Eve, movie night and plenty of Cards Against Humanity! We loved our stay – we can’t recommend this beautiful place & the surrounding area highly enough. Love Linzi, Jon, Annie, Anthony, Kimberly, Megan, & Sarah xxx Top Tip! Go to Churston Court Inn for an incredible fillet steak!

A fantastic holiday home for families.

We were a party of 9 adults and one baby. The house is fantastic with lots of room to spread out and do different activities. The main dining room was super for the big family meals we had and also for pushing the buggy round to get the baby to sleep! The kitchens are kitted out with plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses so you don't have to be washing up every time you have a cup of tea. Brixham and the surrounding area are very pretty and there are plenty of things to do, we could have done with two weeks instead of one. The only down side is the busy road to the side of the property which is a bit noisy when you are out in the garden and which you almost always have to get out on to when you are going anywhere. We would gladly go back and can recommend it for big family groups.
