Brixham’s one of the country’s most important fishing ports, and if you want to learn more about the hard work that goes into ensuring restaurants across the country have fresh fish everyday then there’s only one place to start – the Brixham Fish Market. If you watched the Sky Atlantic documentary Fish Town then you’ll already have seen some of the action, and the only way to get up close to it during a stay nearby is to set your alarm clock for way before dawn and join one of the regular tours of the market.
The market sees more than 40 different types of fish sold at auction, and more than half of what’s auctioned in the market is exported around the world. You’ll be shown the ropes by Barry Young from Brixham Trawler Agents before heading off to Shipmates, a favourite haunt for breakfast with many of the fishermen you'll see at the market.
Tickets for the tour must be booked in advance, and each one starts at 6am (the tour price includes breakfast too). All ticket prices also include a donation to the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, so you won’t only learn a lot but you’ll be supporting a great cause too.
