With their locations right beside the Taw and Torridge estuaries there are few places more suited to a regatta celebrating all things connected to the maritime life than Appledore and its neighbour Instow. The Appledore and Instow Regatta takes place at the beginning of each August and sees a whole host of different events, stalls and activities.
There’s always a different theme for each regatta, and the Sunday sees the actual regatta take place so this is the time to pull up a pew beside the water and watch the boats taking part. The regatta always includes Gaffers and Luggers sailing races and dragon boat-style racing, so it’s always fun to sit back and watch the action unfold offshore.
If you prefer to stay on dry land then you’ll be able to take part in (or just stand back and watch) tug of war, a crabbing competition and all kinds of family activities. There’s always an art show, and the stalls ensure that there’s plenty of opportunity to sample local produce and support some great causes during the event.
