There are many sights we’re all used to seeing at Watergate Bay, from crashing waves to the country’s most adept surfers riding them, but few are as thrilling as the annual Polo on the Beach. GWR Polo on the Beach has established itself as one of the area’s most impressive annual events, and it takes place each June in front of delighted crowds.
Some of the world’s best polo players descend on Watergate Bay to treat spectators to a thrilling match in the swell. Polo on the Beach usually falls over a weekend, with a match on each day followed by the trophy presentations and live music. Refreshment is available in the shape of a BBQ, so visitors can enjoy tucking in on the sand in one of the county’s most beautiful locations.
The Devil’s Horseman stunt team have wowed the crowds with their fearless feats in previous years, and each match starts with a run through of the rules – so you’ll soon be up to speed on what’s going on if you’ve never watched polo before. Polo on the Beach is a free event and there’s plenty of space to sit and watch the action (we’d recommend arriving early to pick a good vantage point all the same), and there’s always the informal atmosphere you’d expect from an event at one of Cornwall’s friendliest beaches.
The fun doesn’t end when the match does, as many stay to watch the sun go down and enjoy the entertainment. Watergate Bay is one of Cornwall’s most famous beaches, and with more than a mile of sand at low tide it makes the perfect place for this stunning event.
