This is an exciting one for all Poldark fans - the real Poldark Mine! Not only is this historic gem the inspiration for the Poldark novels (and the programme of course), but it was also the setting for some of the scenes on BBc 1's most recent adaptation of the take. The guided tour of the 18th century tin mine enables you to follow in the footsteps of the local men who once worked the tin mine (and Aiden Turner...), and it’s open to visitors between April and October.
Various finds on the site have made the mine one of the most important of its kind, and it's even been designated a World Heritage Site. Now a peaceful place to visit in the pretty Cornish landscape, this area was once a thriving hub of industrial activity and it meant long, hard days of work for many. A selection of craft workshops sell locally made jewellery, pottery, candles and much more, so there's opportunity to take a piece of the county home with you as well as experience its past.
If you fancy making your adventure slightly more sinister, book yourself on one of the evening ghost tours of the mine, where you’ll be led around the tunnels by candlelight. The ghost tours of Poldark Mine operate in April, July and August.
