Wheal Martyn was once home to the largest mining industry in Cornwall, and it’s now a varied family attraction that tells the story of just how important the site was to the county. Cornwall’s history is entwined with the mining industry, so this is a great family attraction in St Austell for gaining an insight into life in the mines. China Clay Country Park is the only clay museum in the UK, and there really is something for everyone. The china clay mined in Cornwall changed the world, and the industry generated billions of pounds.
The attraction is set in 26 acres of country park, so there are some gorgeous woodland walks to enjoy during your visit, as well as the opportunity to see mining in action. The attraction is also home to the county’s biggest working waterwheel, interactive displays and enthralling artefacts to explore. The attraction sits in a valley that was once home to some of the county’s busiest china clay works, and the works are now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
There aren’t many opportunities to peer down into the depths of a working pit these days, and for most visitors this part of the attraction is an exciting experience. Dogs are welcome throughout the grounds, and many enjoy a walk in the surrounding woodland during their visit.
