If you’re thinking about using your Cornwall holiday as a chance to pick up some new tips for the kitchen then where better to learn than in Padstow? Padstow has become the foodie capital of the county thanks to celebrity chef Rick Stein and his empire of eateries.
Padstow Seafood School is another of Stein’s projects, and its classes are designed to cover all aspects of seafood cookery. The classes have a natural approach so students will soon find themselves doing anything from stir frying squid to steaming sea bass almost without even thinking about it. The school overlooks the estuary and the harbour beyond, and as settings for learning to prepare fresh seafood go it’s not bad at all.
The experienced chefs demonstrate each skill before letting the pupils get hands on and try for themselves, and the highlight of the lesson is always lunch when they’re free to sample their own culinary masterpieces. We know it’s one thing to create a new dish under professional supervision and in an environment where you feel relaxed and supported, but quite another to recreate it back at home when it’s just you.
Rick Stein’s thought of everything though, and you’ll be given a cookery school folder to take home with you that’s packed with recipes, skills and cooking techniques to help you keep up the cooking once you’ve left Cornwall.
Courses include one day courses, courses aimed at children, half day courses and two day courses. Choose to specialise in shellfish, tapas, vegetarian cookery and much more – you’ll leave with a new confidence to impress those back home.
