The Beast of Bodmin

The Beast of Bodmin

Things To Do

You don’t have to have visited Bodmin Moor to have heard about the Beast of Bodmin, and it’s probably one of the country’s most famous and enduring legends. There have been reports of strange sightings and peculiar goings on across Cornwall’s beautiful Bodmin Moor for decades, and there are all kinds of theories as to what (if anything) the beast could be.

The beast is thought to be a black wild cat, and although the evidence has been dismissed by most authorities every now and then a bemused walker captures the creature on camera and revives the debate. Some believe that a family of panthers may have been released on the moor at some point, others believe it’s a phantom cat and some believe that the sightings are nothing more than everyday household cats caught at a misleading angle...

The claims became so earnest that there was an official investigation into the Bodmin Beast in 1995, although the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food found nothing to support the idea of a wild panther-like animal roaming the landscape, in fact, it was concluded that it would be nearly impossible for one to survive on the moor.
