Compton Acres is home to 10 acres of historic private gardens, and they’re open to the public (and their dogs) every day of the week. The gardens date back to 1924 and they’re the perfect example of an English garden. Created in a Victorian Mixed Style, Compton Acres also include a taste of the more exotic in the form of Japanese gardens and an Italian garden. Recent restoration has seen more than 1000 new plants arrive at the gardens, so they remain one of the most impressive private gardens in the country.
Seasonal activities bring the gardens to life for the whole family, and as dogs on leads are welcome throughout they’re a popular choice for a family walk during a dog friendly Dorset holiday. There are regular yoga and pilates classes in the gardens, so if you really want to unwind you’ll receive a warm welcome and expert instruction. The cafe and tea rooms serve up hot meals (including Sunday lunches) and they make just the setting to enjoy a traditional roast dinner together.
Gardens at Compton Acres include The Rock and Water Garden, the Heather Garden, the Italian and Japanese Gardens and the wooded Valley. The Wooded Valley is set in a pine wood, and winding trails and tumbling waterfalls make it a spectacular place for a stroll.
