The Rollright Stones

Things To Do

There’s something magical about The Rollright Stones that’s lured visitors for generations, and this is the attraction to take the kids to and get their imaginations all fired up about the local myths and legends.  Found on the border between Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, this historic site’s home to The King’s Men, The Whispering Knights and The King Stone.

So what’s it all about? Well, The King’s Men is a ceremonial stone circle dating back all the way to the Neolithic period, and the myths that surround it have become part of the region’s folklore over the centuries. If you believe the rumours, the stones were once the king’s men who fell victim to a witch’s spell as she tried to take over the throne…well you never know…

It’s not all doom and gloom though, it’s said that the spell breaks at midnight every night, when the men come back to life and dance in a circle. One of the most popular legends is that it’s impossible to accurately count the number of stones, and that if you count them twice you’ll never get the same number…so have a go while you’re there and see if it’s true!
