The stage and television legend Christopher Biggins will be spreading some Christmas cheer in Plymouth on 22 November as he switches on the city’s lights.

Along with the much-loved Military Wives Choir, Christopher Biggins will launch the most exciting of seasons around 6.15pm in the city centre.

As well as performance from the now-famous military wives there will be family fun in the centre from 4pm, so don’t miss out!

Wells Cathedral will fill with the sound of traditional shanty on 24 November as the Port Isaacs Fisherman’s Friends perform a selection of rousing and joyful shanties and Cornish folk songs.

Come and see why the booming voices of the men have entranced audience for 15 years. Hailing from the whitewashed Port Isaac (the setting for ITV’s Doc Martin), the group includes five baritones, a pair of top tenors, two second tenors and one bass.

Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends have played a huge part in the revival of English folk music over the last ten years, and with a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award under their belts they look set to lead the way in to 2013 too.

Gorillas arrive in Torbay

Anybody wandering along Torquay’s seafront today would have been greeted by the peculiar sight of giant model gorillas steaming across the bay on the Greenway ferry.

The gorillas are part of a Paignton Zoo project to mark its 90th anniversary, and they’ll be painted by local artists and displayed at various locations around the bay next summer.

The life size models will form a fascinating art trail around Torbay and Exeter, and their bright decoration will be sponsored by local businesses.

Love it or hate it Damien Hirst’s statue has arrived in Ilfracombe

Whether you love it or hate it there’s no going back now, the controversial bronze Damien Hirst monument has been erected on Ilfracombe’s seafront. The statue of a pregnant woman holding a sword aloft measures 20 metres and is the newest addition to the unspoilt Devon skyline.

The artist chose the picturesque town of Ilfracombe on the north Devon coast to lend his statue (named Verity) to for two decades.

The monument has divided residents and visitors, with some curious to go and have a look and others feeling that it mars the area’s beauty. One thing’s for sure though, it’s certainly inspired plenty of feeling!

Enjoy Halloween in true Cornwall style at Halloweden. The Eden Project makes spooky fun with its wintry ice rink, magical crafts and Little Monsters’ Ball Halloween discos throughout half-term.

The whole family is welcome to the disco, and fancy dress is encouraged!

The Wishcraft tent will also be open for those who are brave enough to enter, and activities include potion workshops, wand decorating, storytelling, face painting and much more.

Barely a month goes by without Newquay’s Watergate Bay hosting an exciting event, and 13 and 14 October will see The British Stand Up Paddle Championships pleasing the crowds.

The guys will battle it out for the Watergate Waterman Trophy and those on the beach will be able to watch the exciting distance race under the gaze of the judges.

Stand up paddle surfing is one of the oldest forms of surfing originally used by Waikki Beach surfing instructors.  The event may look effortless and graceful from the shore but the competition for the trophy is fierce, so expect a show!
