Look out for the lion cubs at Paignton Zoo

Keep your eyes peeled if you visit Paignton Zoo this weekend, as you may just catch a glimpse of its four lion cubs.

Paignton holiday cottages The attraction welcomed the rare Asiatic lion cubs in May, and they may be visible to the public in their enclosure this weekend.

The cubs were born to mother Indu and father Mwamba, and fingers crossed the warm weather will entice them out for their admirers very soon.

The eyes of the world will fall on Weymouth this Friday, and the bay is set to mark the Opening Ceremony with a firework display worthy of the Olympians.

The Weymouth Bayside Festival also starts on 27 July and runs until 12 August throughout the Olympics. This scenic site will be THE place to enjoy the atmosphere and tickets will be available upon entry each day from 10am. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children.

The area will host big screens so you can watch the action as it unfolds, an Olympic Sailing Heritage Exhibition, an extreme skate park, live acts, military displays and much more.

Get ready to celebrate the South Devon crab!

The South Devon Crab Festival will run from 30 July – 5 August and Blue Chip Holidays are proud to be sponsoring it.

The week will be jam packed with various events dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the delicious local crab. These include talks from TV personalities and crab experts, input from local fishermen and plenty of chances to sample South Devon crab in various cafes, restaurants and at street parties!

A pair of very famous faces were spotted amongst the surfers on Cornwall’s Polzeath beach last weekend, as William shunned the offer of a seat on Centre Court to enjoy the surf with Harry.

The princes enjoyed a day bodyboarding on the north Cornwall beach while Kate watched the nerve shredding final unfold back in London.

Polzeath Beach has always been a favourite with celebrities, probably because of its long stretch of sand and stunning surroundings – and PM David Cameron holidayed there last year too.

Damien Hirst chooses Ilfracombe to host a stunning landmark

Damien Hirst has offered to lend the North Devon town of Ilfracombe a stunning 20m statue of a pregnant woman that will become a landmark for two decades.

The quirky artist has offered to place the bronze statue on the tip of Ilfracombe’s harbour, and locals have nicknamed it “the belly of the South”. Set to be even taller than the famous Angel of the North, the statue is waiting for planning permission before the plans are finalised.

The statue would depict a pregnant woman with scales in her right hand and a sword in her left. The sculpture will stand on a plinth of legal books and will represent truth and justice.

Walk the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay

There are hundreds of scenic walks around Torquay, but this one’s for those of you who prefer a short and smooth stroll, and of course all Agatha Christie fans!

The Agatha Christie Mile takes in some of the Torquay spots that had a place in the crime writer’s heart and as there’s only one hill it’s not too strenuous.

The walk starts at the tourist information centre beside the harbour and takes in ten sites around the seafront and harbourside.

Torbay will welcome one of its biggest family events back on 3 -5 August – the Torbay Steam Fair.

Torbay Steam Fair Working steam engines, vintage and classic cars, and the world’s biggest travelling concert organ will be amongst the beautiful engines on display.

Don’t miss the Victory and Locomotion on Tour which is brand new for this year. The 118 key ‘Victory’ will play in unison with ‘Locomotion’ making a unique treat.

Newquay’s Watergate Bay makes a stunning location for pretty much any sport, but Polo on the Beach is one of Cornwall’s most unique events.

Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach returns on 11 September and it promises to feature some of the UK’s top polo players. The adrenalin courses as 30 horses take to the waves as professional polo players battle it out in the autumn swells.

The match starts at 6.30pm, and there will be Veuve Clicquot champagne and a yummy beach BBQ on offer to help make the event truly special. The event is free, and spectators can get right up close to the action and even say hello to some of the players after the match.

Sci-Fi lands in Torquay this July

Torquay Museum welcomes a stunning exhibition of Sci-Fi costumes and props from the big screen from 1 July.

The museum will host Sci-Fi at the Movies, an exhibition of costumes and objects that have appeared in blockbusters such as Star Wars, Alien, Matrix, Terminator, Star Trek, Dr Who, I Robot and many more.

The exhibition will run from 1 July –4 September, and the museum is open every day between the same dates.

Rock Oyster Festival: 22 – 24 June

The Rock Oyster Festival will take place at the historic Dinham House which has gorgeous views of the Camel Estuary. Festival-goers will munch their way through hundreds of local mussels in celebration of the area’s seafood, and there will be music and arts to enjoy too.
