I’m not sure if there are any scientific facts to back up my conclusion, but I can certainly vouch for the relaxing powers attributed to a sporadic long weekend away to Braunton in North Devon.
We decided a few days beforehand that we needed a quick getaway to recharge and hopefully enjoy some forecasted sunshine. But to be honest, even if the weather wasn’t great, we knew we’d still appreciate some peace and quiet and a long soak in a hot tub with a glass or two of fizz!
At 5:30pm on a Friday evening, the journey up to Braunton was relatively quiet and stress free. The sun was just setting as we arrived at Broadpath and we began to unpack an alarming amount of luggage for just a few days away …. after all, you always need to pack the ‘just in case’ items in the event that you might decide to go for a long hike for the first time since your teens, or a 5 course meal at a posh restaurant…..or maybe that’s just me!
Upon opening the front door, I was delighted to find a bottle of fizz and some delish looking homemade scones with cream and jam, which remind me that in our haste to find and get settled at Broadpath we’d completely forgotten to pick up any food, very unlike me! So, before we jumped in the hot tub we got back in the car and drove just 5 minutes down the road to Tesco Express and stocked up on the essentials.
Driving through Braunton on a Friday night, we realised just how popular this little place can get on a lovely warm evening. It’s no surprise since there are plenty of options for food, from takeaways to pubs and even a large restaurant called SQ Bar & Restaurant which we ventured to on the second evening, there’s something for everyone.
Once we got back to the lodge we unpacked our weekend feast and got stuck in to cooking dinner. Thankfully the lodge is set up with all kitchen essentials which helped us settle in to our home from home for the weekend.
Naturally the next thing to do after polishing off a mammoth curry is pop open the fizz and jump in to the hot tub! It was a nice still evening and by the time I’d fully relaxed in the warm bubbling water with funky colour changing lights, I realised just how lucky I was to be enjoying such a beautiful evening with stars shining brightly in a fantastic part of the countryside.
We decided to head off to before we both turned into wrinkly little prunes...The gorgeous king size bed was a welcome after the hectic workweek, but I was sure to rinse off in the quirky outdoor shower beforehand! It goes without saying, that we both drifted off within minutes of jumping into bed and enjoyed a lovely, uninterrupted night’s sleep before waking to the glorious sunshine the next day. Next on the agenda, bacon sandwiches ahoy and a trip to the beach, perfect!
Now, I’m blaming the sat nav for taking us around the houses to Croyde as the journey home didn’t take half as long as the journey there which should only be 10 minutes! Though this did allow us to appreciate the countryside location a little more and have a nosey at some cute little cottages along the way.
With Croyde and Saunton Sands being a short drive away, you’re really spoilt for choice if you fancy venturing out of your lodge for a few hours. Though you will need to take some cash with you, as Croyde doesn’t have any cash points which makes purchasing an essential ice cream a little difficult! After a few hours at the beach we decided to head back to the lodge to make the most of the peace and quiet and get stuck into our books which had been collecting dust at home.
We enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing afternoon reading, hot tubbing, listening to the faint bleating of sheep and gorging on scones, could life get any better?!
Joking aside, this is really what a short break away is about. At Broadpath you can properly recharge your batteries and enjoy some quality time with a loved one before heading back to work fully refreshed. I’d recommend this to anyone, and will certainly be back again soon!
